Too much! and what I discovered

Oh. my. goodness. I tried to do too much in the month of November.

I tried to participate in NaNoWriMo for the first couple weeks and then realized it was taking time away from other writing goals that should be prioritized. Needless to say, I discovered two things: 1) I LOVE the direction my trilogy is heading. 2) Writing the draft for my second book is going to go a LOT faster than the first book.

I participated in a guided group on starting an email list. I missed the last few Zoom chats and goals. Fortunately, they recorded calls so I watched them later. Even though my attendance and participation wasn’t perfect, I discovered two things: 1) I CAN do this. This is doable for me. 2) I know what I want to create for a lead magnet. You know, that free thing people get when they sign up for my newsletter 😊 Of course, anyone already signed up will receive it as well.

Getting through beta reader feedback is taking longer than I thought it would. Which means I won’t be submitted to agents and publishers as soon as I would like. But, that’s okay! I would rather have my manuscript be the best that it can be 😊 Two things I discovered: 1) The best way to take critique is to remember that a writer’s work is never done. 2) It is good to keep in mind whether or not a beta reader typically reads that genre.

I picked up three books from the library, to read and decide if they would work as comparable titles. The goal is to find books you can compare yours to when you submit a proposal to a potential agent/editor/publisher. Two things I discovered: 1) It’s FUN to consider reading books as part of the work. 2) This process takes much longer than I would like.

I feel like I could go on, but my brain is fried at the moment 😏 The month of December should be a little better. I’ve put my second manuscript on hold and the guided group is over. My priorities: Finishing my beta reader feedback, finishing my proposal, and (hopefully) completing my lead magnet. We’ll see!

Do you frequently “overbook” yourself? What do you learn about yourself and what you’re trying to do, during those times?
